Can your student stand the test—of 1st grade math? Online practice test options and variations seem endless. The internet is infamous for, among other things, its uncanny ability to make decision-making difficult. What should you look for in the right practice test? Is it worth it to find a practice test for your child at all? How are they beneficial? Let’s dig in.
If your child has an extreme case of test anxiety, it may indicate other social anxieties, learning disabilities, or other issues. Don’t be afraid to reach out to find solutions.
It’s likely that your 1st grader is fairly new to the concept of test-taking. Learning becomes more structured and serious as time passes. They may adapt smoothly with no need for additional help. On the other hand, things like important tests may cause a new kind of distress that they have never faced before.

In addition, seek a meeting with your child’s teacher. They will be able to accurately pinpoint areas your child needs to focus on. With this information, you will be able to find the most effective and needed practice tests. Moreover, your child’s teacher may have some good resources for finding 1st grade math online practice tests. After all, less search time equals more practice time.
While there is a myriad of 1st grade math online choices, don’t discount pencil and paper. Your child may reap more benefits from a more traditional test simulation. On many of the sites where you can find online tests, they may include a library of printable tests for you to choose from. This, of course, depends on the child and their needs. Keep in mind that they are not mutually exclusive. A mix of both could make for a powerful and effective set of study methods. As a teacher, this is what I always recommend.
The point of a practice test is to not only exercise your child’s math skills. It is also to exercise their abilities in a testing environment. That being said, you should try and simulate the surroundings of a testing room. You don’t have to put your couches outside and replace all the furniture with desks. Simply replicate the quiet, focused air of an exam.
Before the test, ensure your child has ample study time. Go over notes with them, practice with some flashcards, play some 1st grade math online games, or whatever works best for them. Discuss with them the purpose and importance of the practice test.
If necessary, take the test several times over the course of a week or so. Allow some to be taken with notes and, eventually, without. As most tests are taken with notes strictly not allowed, your child will get a sense of solving math problems from memory. However, taking a few rounds with notes lets them cement and exercise the concepts with less stress.
