Unlike the other months, there are only 28 days in February. It is the only month that has that few of days. The rest of the months have more.
At the end of this month, Debby will be taking a huge exam to get certified for a department at her job. The exam will cover math and English skills. Since Debby hasn’t studied these subjects in years, she will need to spend an equal amount of time studying them.
So, she needs to figure out how many days she will spend studying each subject.
To do this, you will need to know the factors of 28. So, let’s see how to find those factors.
Factors of 28 are 1, 2, 4, 7, 14, and 28
The factors of a number like 28 are the numbers from one to the number, 28, that can be evenly divided into it without having a remainder. Therefore, not all numbers will be factors. Also, each factor has a partner that is also a factor. For instance, 4 is a factor of 28 because 4 goes into 28 without having a remainder.
However, we need to know its factor partner. This would be the number that can be multiplied to number 4 to get 28. So, 4’s factor partner is 7.
We need to see if there are any others. We will look at multiplication facts to see if any other number between 1 and 28 can or can’t be divided evenly into 28 without having remainders. If it has a remainder, it is not a factor of 28.
With these, several of them do not equally divide into 28, so the number that was closest is shown. It is also crossed out since it would not be a factor of 28.
Back to the exam for Debby. We have learned that there are 6 factors which are 1, 2, 4, 7, 14, and 28. The factor of 2 has a partner of 14. This means that there are 14 days in each group since there are 2 groups. Debby will spend 14 days studying each subject.
You live on a low-rise apartment building. Sadly, your apartment is on the top floor, and there is no elevator, just a bunch of stairs. There are 28 stairs to be exact. So, everyday you must climb 28 stairs to get to your apartment. There are landings every so often and the staircase turns. Use your knowledge of factors and logic to determine how many landings are in this staircase.
We know that there are factors of 28 as 1, 2, 4, 7, 14, and 28. Obviously, we can rule out 1 and 28 because there are some landings. So, there are either 2 landings with 14 steps in each. There are 4 landings with 7 steps each or 7 landings with 4 steps each. There could also be 14 landings with 2 steps each. I am sure we could agree that it would be crazy to have 14 landings. Seven landings would also be a lot. So, there are probably either 2 or 4 landings.
Tabitha is having a party. She buys party cups that come in groups of 28. Based on the fact, that several people will throw away their cups during the party and getting another cup, she wants to make sure she has enough cups for the party. There will be 7 people at the party. How many cups will each person be able to use? Explain using the factors of 28.
There would be 4 cups per person because 7 and 4 are factor partners for 28. That means that 4 times 7 equals 28.
With 28 pieces of paper, how many groups would you have if you grouped 2 pieces of paper together at a time?
Two’s factor partner is 14, so there would be 14 groups of paper with 2 pieces of paper in each group.
The only way to make sure that you have all of the factor of a number like 28 is to divide each number from 1 to 28 into 28 to see if it evenly divides into it without having a remainder. Then you can be assured that you have all of the factors unless you divided incorrectly. Sometimes, it is best to check and recheck again.
There are only a few places where things come in groups of 28. The main one would be February. February is known for having 28 days (except during leap year). There are other places where there would be groups that come with 28 items normally. Other ideas would be a 28-gauge shotgun and 28 weeks. Twenty-eight weeks would be 7 months.
A problem would be that someone would experience with finding the factors of 28 would be that he or she may not get all of the factors. Some may end up missing. The reason would be that there are only 6 factors for 28. I would believe that 4 and 7 would be the ones that would be the more obvious factors. However, 2 and 14 would not. These might be missed. To make sure this doesn’t happen, a person can divide each number from 1 to 28 to see if each number divides evenly without having a remainder.
