Introduction

Go Math Grade 3 and ArgoPrep Grade 3 Workbooks – what’s the difference?

As a parent, I know the pain and stress I feel when my daughter is struggling with a concept that she should know. Immediately, I run to the internet and begin searching all of the different resources available to help her.

I usually spend a shocking amount of time and money to support her and help her learn.

One of the biggest problems I encounter is that there is so much available that I  am often at a loss of what to buy and what will create the biggest impact.

When your child is struggling in school (or craving a challenge) it can be hard to discern the best route. Tutoring can be costly and time-consuming.

Online platforms can be unappealing to many different types of learners.

And the countless games, worksheets, and activities can be a burden to a busy parent (who wants to find the specific lesson and print out worksheets every single day).

Importance of Supporting Math at Home

After a long day of school, the last thing your child probably wants to do is work on more homework.

And for many parents, it’s not worth the battle to add more work to the already growing list of homework.

Between nightly reading minutes, math homework, and anything else your child may need to accomplish, homework time probably feels like a battlefield in many homes each night.

It’s so easy to let your child slide and say “tomorrow” for homework as opposed to engaging in the fight night after school.

But, we all know the risk with “tomorrow” could turn into “day after tomorrow” or (at least in my house) “never”. There is tremendous value in adding supplemental math support at home.

Studies indicate that the average student should have at least 61.2 minutes of math instruction each day (Larson, 2017).

So what happens if your child only has a block of 45 minutes in school each day?

Larson argues that a 15-minute deficiency each day could equal a 60-day loss over a 180-day school year. That 30% loss will be reflected as your student progresses during their academic career, but most notably you will begin to see the lack of time and their ability to understand the content being taught on a day-to-day basis!

Taking that statistic one step further, this loss could equate to over a year of lost math practice/instruction time during their elementary years alone!

Imagine your child entering into 9th grade, but their middle school stopped teaching at 7th grade, as a parent you’d be outraged!

All teachers, classrooms, and schools are different. Your child may be getting a sufficient amount of time with math each day, but why wait to find that out when they’ve fallen behind?

Common Struggles with 3rd Grade Math

There are many areas where children struggle with 3rd Grade math, so it is important to know the signs in order to identify the problem early.

During 3rd Grade, your child will be expected to be able to add and subtract within 10, understand basic division and multiplication, and be able to identify the important parts of a word problem.

If your child is struggling with reading or any of the fundamental skills, they will have an incredibly hard time overcoming and adding to their skillset with the new principles being taught in 3rd grade.

There are obvious signs that your child is struggling, including that their grades may be noticeably lower in math than their other subjects.

But it is important to pay attention to the way they talk about math as well. If your bubbly child is blatantly negative about math, this is a clear indicator that they are struggling.

If your child is consistently failing assessments, you may want to discuss anxiety with them.

3rd Grade is a crucial time for math and there are many ways that you can support your child and encourage their success.

The most important thing that you can do to help your child become better at math is to give them tools to help build their confidence.

By creating an environment at home where your child can begin to see success with math, they will be more likely to try to apply new skills as they are learning them.

If your child struggles with test-taking anxiety, work with them at home to help alleviate some of the stress they experience.

Workbook Formats: Go Math! Grade 3 and ArgoPrep

Both Go Math Grade 3 and ArgoPrep follow similar formats for skill practice. Broken up into units and lessons, Go Math! Grade 3 units span over a few weeks. The overview page explains the concepts of the unit and gives an example of how to solve the type of problem present in the lessons.

It provides a short vocabulary list with a definition. This information is delivered in both English on one side and Spanish on the other, making it accessible and usable by many parents.

ArgoPrep’s workbook is broken up into weeks, scaffolding (that’s Teacher talk for increasing difficulty) the concepts as the weeks progress.

A link to a video lesson accompanies each week, meaning that parents who are trying to help their kids have real-time, quick instruction through video whenever they need it!

Each week also features a short, one-sentence summary of the skills being worked on that week.

Each book features a mix of standard problems and word problems, exposing students to a variety of mathematical equations.

Go Math! features one page of “Extra Practice” at the end of the unit.

ArgoPrep uses day five for an assessment and provides an extra day (day six) for a challenge question.

Workbook Preview: Go Math! Grade 3 and ArgoPrep

A detailed overview of the topics covered by Go Math! Grade 3 workbook and ArgoPrep Grade 3 workbook.

Per Common Core’s website, 3rd-grade math is all about: “four critical areas: (1) developing an understanding of multiplication and division and strategies for multiplication and division within 100; (2) developing an understanding of fractions, especially unit fractions (fractions with numerator 1); (3) developing an understanding of the structure of rectangular arrays and of the area; and (4) describing and analyzing two-dimensional shapes.”

Just like every year before this, students will be rapidly building on the information they have learned. If they have fallen behind, those fractures of knowledge are going to become cracks (and maybe even rifts!) as new information is piled onto your student.

In order to best support your child’s learning, ArgoPrep Grade 3 and Go Math Grade 3 workbooks deliver quality practice, that is standard aligned and easy for you and your child to understand.

Below is a reference of ArgoPrep and Go Math!’s workbooks to see how closely each workbook stacks up.

Conclusion

Sometimes when I let my mind wander to how insanely difficult it is to be a parent in 2020 I can be overcome with all of the things it takes to raise a child.

I am supposed to care about what my children eat, who they play with, what they watch, and what their toys are made of.

Then at school, I need to make sure the teacher to student ratio is reasonable, they are getting quality instruction, enrichment, and differentiation, and ideally an organic garden they can work in during recess.

Let’s not forgot that their screen time should be educational. Just writing this exhausts me, so I am willing to guess that there is some stress for you out there too.

If your child is struggling with math, there is a reason to celebrate when you purchase an ArgoPrep workbook.

With this purchase, you know that the workbook is going to teach, reinforce, and encourage your child in new and exciting ways.

ArgoPrep does the hard work so you can support and encourage (opposed to fight and have to learn math again).
