## Want to practice?

### Solution

We use fractions to denote values that are not whole numbers. The fractions are made of two parts -numerator and denominator. The numerator part denotes the partial value of the fraction and the denominator denotes the number of parts in the whole.

The fraction is used not only to denote partial numbers, but also whole numbers.
All whole numbers are denoted with a denominator of 1.

### Example

$$\frac{\mathbf4}{\mathbf1}\boldsymbol,\boldsymbol\;\frac{\mathbf{12}}{\mathbf1}\boldsymbol,\boldsymbol\;\frac{\mathbf{21}}{\mathbf1}$$

Hence all the fractions that have 1 in the denominator are simplified as whole numbers.

Here the fraction $$\frac11$$ denotes ‘one part out of one’ which is equal to the whole.

Hence the value of the given fraction is 1.

## Remember

Here are some common terms you should be familiar with.

• In the fraction $$\frac{1}{1}$$, the number 1 is the dividend (our numerator)
• The number 1 is our divisor (our denominator)
