The method of denoting a non-whole number is called a fraction.

For example, one-half, two-third etc. are non-whole numbers and cannot be denoted using a whole number.

Fraction is the easiest and understandable form of denoting a partial number by indicating it in parts.

A fraction has two parts- the numerator and the denominator. The numerator denotes the number of parts that are taken and the denominator denotes the total number of parts in the whole. Hence it gives the expression of “parts out of the whole”.

All partial numbers can be denoted by fractions. Even whole numbers can be denoted by fractions with the denominator of 1.

Another form of denoting partial values is the decimals. The decimals are also a combination of the whole number and fractions separated by the decimal point. The values to the left of the decimals are whole numbers and the values to the right are the fractions.

All fractions can be converted to decimals and vice-versa. The fractions are converted by dividing the value on the top of the fraction, i.e. numerator by the value at the bottom of the fraction, i.e., denominator.

Here we have taken the example of a simple fraction

$$\frac9{10}$$

that is converted to decimal 0.9 using the division method.
