Addition Using Number Lines
Overview
When you add groups of objects together, you can find how many there are in all.
You can add large or small numbers together.
You can use a NUMBER LINE to help you add.
We can use the number line above to help us.
We will solve the problem 5 + 7 by starting on the number 5. Then we will jump ahead 7 places to find the SUM.
5… 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12!
5 + 7 = 12
Here’s another example.
We can use the number line above to help us.
We will solve the problem 3 + 6 by starting on the number 3. Then we will jump ahead 6 places to find the SUM.
3… 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9!
3 + 6 = 9

5 + 4 =
5… 6, 7, 8, 9!
5 + 4 = 9
3 + 2 =
3… 4, 5!
3 + 2 = 5
4 + 9 =
4… 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13!
4 + 9 = 13
8 + 7 =
