Overview

You can find how many there are in all by adding groups of objects together. Sometimes the groups are big and sometimes they are small.

When we add larger numbers, sometimes we must REGROUP them.

Let’s look at the example below.


In the problem, we will add

16 + 25.

When we start in the ones column and add 6 + 5, the sum is 11. Any number larger than 9 must be regrouped.

We write the 1 in the ones column and then move the other 1 to the top of the tens column because we are regrouping.

Now, we are ready to add the tens also.

1 + 1 + 2 = 4.

Therefore, our answer is 41.

Let’s try a few more problems together!


In the problem, we will add

25 + 49.

When we start in the ones column and add 5 + 9, the sum is 14. Any number larger than 9 must be regrouped.

We write the 4 in the ones column and then move the other 1 to the top of the tens column because we are regrouping.

Now, we are ready to add the tens also.

1 + 2 + 4 = 7.

Therefore, our answer is 74.

Here is another one to try.

In the problem, we will add

36 + 17.

When we start in the ones column and add 6 + 7, the sum is 13. Any number larger than 9 must be regrouped.

We write the 3 in the ones column and then move the other 1 to the top of the tens column because we are regrouping.

Now, we are ready to add the tens also.

1 + 3 + 1 = 5.

Therefore, our answer is 53.

1 + 5 + 2 = 8.
