Overview

Once you are familiar with Adding Doubles, we can use this strategy to help us understand the concept of Adding Doubles Plus 1.

Let’s quickly review adding doubles.

When you add two of the SAME number, you are adding with DOUBLES FACTS.

1 + 1 and 2 + 2 are both doubles facts.
Look at the example below:

5 + 5 = 10 is a doubles fact. Knowing your doubles facts can help you to remember other addition problems.

Now, how can we use this knowledge to help us solve certain addition problems? Let’s take a look at a special addition problem below.

3 + 4 =

We are working with 3 + 4, and this is special because we can use the adding double facts and plus 1 to it.

For example, we know that 3 + 3 = 6, so 3 + 4 must have a sum that is one more.

Therefore,

3 + 4 = 7

Doubles facts are easy to remember. Look at the pattern below.

Let’s try a few doubles plus 1 facts! Use the pictures to help you solve.

4 + 5 =

4 + 4 = 8, so 4 + 5 = 9

6 + 7 =

6 + 6 = 12, so 6 + 7 = 13

5 + 6 =

5 + 5 = 10, so 5 + 6 = 11

2 + 3 =

2 + 2 = 4, so 2 + 3 = 5

Remembering the doubles facts can help you with other math problems too!
