Probability
Overview
Probability tells us how likely or unlikely it is that something will happen.
We can decide how good our chances might be to choose a certain item.
Probability changes depending on how many items there are to choose from!
Look at the graphic below!
Let’s practice some probability!
It is important to decide how many fish there are in all first.
Count the fish! There are 12 fish in all.
There are three different types of fish.
Let’s answer some questions!
You are more likely to catch the first fish. There are MORE of them in the group. This increases the probability that you might catch that kind!
There are 7 blue fishes, one yellow fish, and 4 gray fishes in the picture. The question above is asking you what is more probably for you to pick: the blue fish or gray fish. There are 7 blue fishes and only 4 gray fishes, therefore, probability for you to select the first fish is greater.
Let’s try another one!
You are least likely to catch the first fish because there are fewer of them.
There is actually only one yellow fish.
