Overview

When we compare two numbers, we’re deciding if a number is greater than, less than, or equal to the other number.

For example:

2 is greater than 1

3 is greater than 2

4 is greater than 3

Also:

1 is less than 2

2 is less than 3

3 is less than 4

And:

5 is equal to 5

6 is equal to 6

7 is equal to 7

Let’s use some objects to represent the numbers so it’s easy to compare them.

Let’s put 3 scoops of ice cream on one cone, and 2 scoops of ice cream on another cone.
Now we can see 3 is greater than 2 and 2 is less than 3!

Let’s make some more comparisons.

Let’s put one scoop of ice cream on one cone and 4 scoops on another cone.
Now we can definitely see 4 is greater than 1 and 1 is less than 4!

We can also compare numbers by looking at them on a number line:

Find the number 8 on the number line. Then find the number 4.

The number 8 is TO THE RIGHT of 4 on the number line.
That means 8 is GREATER THAN 4.

The number 4 is TO THE LEFT of 8 on the number line.
That means 4 is LESS THAN 8.

Let’s take a look at the math symbols we use to compare numbers.

They are:

If we want to compare 4 and 3, it would look like this:

4 > 3

or

3 < 4

If we’re comparing two equal numbers, it would look like this:

4 = 4

Sometimes it’s difficult to remember which symbol to use,
so imagine the GREATER THAN and LESS THAN symbols as crocodiles:

Now, all you have to remember is that the crocodile always wants to eat the BIGGER number!
