# Definition of Zero

## Overview

There’s a very **special** number in math, and its name is **zero**!

**Zero** is a number with **no** value. It means none or nothing or empty.

It looks like this:

It’s a circle with nothing in the middle. **It’s a donut with an empty hole.**

**Imagine you have a box of 6 donuts, and you give all 6 donuts away to your friends.**

How many donuts are left?

**Zero**!

**Zero** is an important number in math because we need a number to represent none.

Let’s look at this math problem:

10 – 10 = ____

We need a zero to complete it, don’t we?

10 – 10 = 0

Most of the time, **zero** is at the **beginning** of a number line, no matter how far it goes….

When we’re learning to count, we may not say zero, but that’s where we began!

(0) 1, 2, 3, 4, 5…..

And when we need to start over, where do we usually start?

At zero!

**Zero is also the way we spot our tens:**

10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100

Zero is a very **helpful** number!
