# Measuring Length with Objects

## Overview

We can **measure** to figure out how **long** or **short** something is.

Think about what tool helps us to measure how long or short something is. If you are thinking about a **ruler**, you would be right!

A ruler helps us measuring an object in inches or centimeters.

In this lesson, we will actually be talking about measuring lengths with objects (and not rulers).

We can use **other** **objects** to help us measure and compare.

Sometimes we measure in **UNITS**.

Look at the picture below.

It can help us to see how long the object is.

How long is the shoe?

**The shoe is about 3 units long.**

You can try measuring with your own unit of measurement.

For example, you can use a paper clip to measure objects!

**Measure your pencil with a paperclip.**

How many paperclips long is it?

My pencil is ____ paperclips long.

**Measure** **your hand.**

How many paperclips long is it?

My hand is ____ paperclips long.

Some things are much longer than others.

It is helpful to use different units to help us measure!

**Let’s try another one!**

**How long is it in units?**

The car is ____ units long.

Let’s try again!

**How long is it in units?**

The bat is ____ units long.

Awesome job! As you can see, we do not always need a ruler to measure the length of an object. We can actually use other objects as a reference and compare the length of different items.
