# Number Patterns

## Overview

In math, there are lots of possible number patterns! Patterns are helpful in figuring out missing numbers or predicting the next number in a sequence.

Here are some examples:

Let’s take a look at one of those number patterns more closely.

This one is counting by twos:

2, 4, 6, 8, 10

We can begin a pattern with any number, too! Let’s say, the number pattern is still counting by twos, but we start with the number 10:

10, 12, 14, 16, 181

What if we started with an odd number and counted by twos? That number pattern would look like this:

3, 5, 7, 9, 11

To discover the pattern, we have to look at the difference between one number and the next one after it. Take a look at this pattern:

5, 10, 15, 20, 25

The difference between 5 and 10 is 5. And the difference between 10 and 15 is 5. And the difference between 15 and 20 is 5. Do you see a pattern? That’s right! It’s adding on 5 each time.

In math, there are also number patterns using shapes. When you spot the pattern, you can fill in the missing shape or predict the next shape. Check out the patterns below:

There are so many different patterns that can be made with shapes!

Let’s take a closer look at this pattern of mugs:

Starting at the beginning, you can see there’s one red cup, then two blue cups, then one red cup, then two blue cups, and so on. This creates a pattern!

Let’s look at one more shape pattern. This one is with cups:

Starting at the beginning, the pattern is one blue cup, one green cup, and one yellow cup repeating over and over.
