Reading a Thermometer
Overview
A thermometer can tell us how warm or cold it is.
We can use thermometers to measure the temperature inside our house.
We can use a thermometer to measure the temperature outside too!
A thermometer can even be used to measure how hot or cold a liquid is, such as water.
Look at the thermometer below:
To read a thermometer, look at the top of the red line. This tells you the temperature.
Temperature is measured in Fahrenheit or Celsius. In the United States, we measure temperature in Fahrenheit. However, when you start doing science experiments in higher grade levels, you will usually measure in Celsius!
Look at the thermometer below. What is the temperature?
It is 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

Look carefully and read the thermometer.

It is 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

Note that the temperature is in Celsius, but it does not matter. You still read the temperature the same way. Just see where the red line goes to, and that is the temperature!
