## Overview

Addition gives the total value of two or more amounts.

It is the action of adding something to something else.

Let’s take a closer look at the example above.

There are five fingers on the first hand and two fingers on the second hand.
We can ADD them by joining the two amounts together.
This will give us the total number of fingers.

When we ADD 5 plus 2, we have 7 in all.
We say: FIVE plus TWO equals SEVEN.
We write it like this: 5 + 2 = 7

Here’s another example.

In this problem, we are joining together two groups of birds.
This will give us the total number of birds.

When we ADD 1 plus 2, we have 3 in all.
We say: ONE plus TWO equals THREE.
We write it like this: 1 + 2 = 3

Let’s take a look at another example with numbers.

This time, we are joining the numbers 5 and 3.
These numbers are known as ADDENDS.

Addends are the amounts that will be joined together.

This problem reads as  5 + 3 = 8.
When the ADDEND 5 is joined with the ADDEND 3, we get a SUM of 8.
SUM is used to describe the total amount.

There are many different words that are used to describe addition. For example, we can JOIN two amounts together to find the TOTAL. Here are several other examples:

Knowing these keywords will help you understand that in order to solve the problem, you must add. You might see these keywords in math story problems.

In the problem, the fish are being joined together. The key words are MORE and SUM. This helps tell us that we need to ADD.

TWO fish joined with SIX fish will give us the correct SUM.

2 + 6 = 8 fish
