Counting up to 10

Overview

Counting allows us to determine the number of objects in a given set. The best way to learn how to count up to 10 is using our fingers!

TIP: Using our fingers is an AWESOME way to help us count. Let’s take the problem 5 + 2. Go ahead and hold up five fingers on one hand. Now count another two fingers. Now let’s go ahead and count all of our fingers that are up. You should have counted a total of 7 fingers, so our answer is 5 + 2 = 7.

There is a pizza party going on! John eats 2 slices of pizza. Henry eats 1 slice of pizza. Lindsey eats 3 slices of pizza. Nancy eats one slice of pizza. How many slices of pizza in total did they all eat?

Practice Question 5

You have done an amazing job counting up to 10. In all of the problems above, we used our counting skills to count UP (which is used in addition problems). We can also use our counting skills to help us with basic subtraction problems. Subtraction is when you take away or remove objects from a collection.

Manny had 8 colored pencils this morning. He gave away 2 colored pencils to his best friend Larry. How many colored pencils does Manny now have?
