Counting up to 20

Overview

Counting is an important skill that we use everyday in life. When we buy items from a store, we count our money to give to the cashier. When we eat delicious cookies, we count how many cookies we choose to eat.

Can you think of things that you count?

Using our fingers is a great way counting up to 10. We have ten fingers so it’s easy to count when we work with numbers from 0 to ten. When working with numbers greater than 10, we can use objects to help us count.

Here you will learn how to count to 20!

First let’s review all of our numbers from 0 to 20.

Now let’s add in some objects to match each number from 0 to 20.

Counting is helpful when we start working with addition and subtraction problems.

Let’s take a look at the following example.

Practice Question 1

Lisa has 7 toy cars and Julia has 8 toy cars. How many cars in total does Lisa and Julia have together?

We can use our counting skills to help us solve this problem. We can use our fingers or we can use objects to help us count.

Let’s try using our fingers.
– We are starting with 7 toy cars, so you can count up 8 fingers to get to the answer 15.

We can also use objects to help us count. Let’s use some marbles!
– We will use 7 marbles to represent the 7 toy cars AND 8 marbles to represent 8 toy cars. Then we can count all the marbles up to get 15.

TIP: Are you having trouble finding objects to use to help you solve these problems? Even if you do not have marbles or other objects in your house, you can draw objects on the paper to help you count! If we take a look at the problem “15 + 4” and you want to use objects to help you solve this problem, go ahead and draw 15 stars and then 4 stars. Now add all the stars up and you should have counted 19 stars in total, which is the answer to the problem.
