# Identify Thirds

## Overview

Fractions are fun! Fractions let us **divide** whole shapes into **parts**.

Sometimes we look at some of the PARTS that make up a WHOLE shape. These are known as FRACTIONS. Look at the example below:

Two PARTS are shaded. There are **THREE** parts that make up **ONE** whole rectangle.

**ONE THIRD** of the rectangle is shaded in.

Many shapes can be divided into thirds, or THREE EQUAL parts.

**Here are some examples:**

**Let’s take a look at this example.**

**How many thirds are shaded?**

This square is divided into equal parts.

**How many parts make up the whole square?**

Three parts make up the whole square.

There are THREE parts.

**How many parts are shaded?**

TWO parts are shaded.

TWO THIRDS of the square is shaded.

**Let’s take a look at this next example.**

**We will decide again how many THIRDS are shaded.**

This circle is divided into equal parts.

How many parts make up the whole circle?

THREE parts make up the whole circle.

There are THREE parts.

How many parts are shaded?

ONE PART is shaded.

ONE THIRD of the circle is shaded.

This triangle is divided into parts.

**How many parts make up the whole triangle?**

Three parts make up the whole triangle.

There are THREE parts.

How many parts are shaded?

THREE PARTS are shaded.

THREE THIRDS of the triangle is shaded.

The WHOLE shape is shaded.
