Overview

Let’s learn about money!

In this lesson, we will learn how to identify and count coins. Coins are a type of money.

Money allows us to buy things.

Look at the graphic below!

We will learn about pennies, nickels, and dimes.

A penny is worth ONE cent.

A nickel is worth FIVE cents.

A dime is worth TEN cents.

We can count and add coins together.

Let’s practice!

Remember: A penny is worth ONE cent.

How much money is here?

Three cents!

1 + 1 + 1 = 3 cents!

Let’s try the problem below.

Remember: A nickel is worth FIVE cents.

How much money is here?

10 cents!

5 + 5 = 10 cents

Let’s try one more!

Remember: A dime is worth TEN cents.

How much money is here?

forty cents!

10 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 40 cents

You should now be comfortable identifying a penny, nickel, and dime. It’s very important for us to know what these coins are and how much they represent, because we use them in everyday life!

For example: If I go to the grocery store and buy a gum that costs 5 cents, but I give the cashier a dime (because I only have a dime in my pocket), the cashier will owe me 5 cents back.

A dime is 10 cents and the gum cost me 5 cents, so I am owed the difference (10 – 5 = 5 cents). We need to be comfortable with this so we know if we are exchanging money properly in the real world!
