Dividing shapes into equal parts

Overview

We can divide shapes and objects into equal groups or parts. When we divide things fairly, the parts must be the same exact size. This means that the parts are EQUAL. If the parts are not the same size, they are UNEQUAL.

For example, if I have one round pizza, I can divide it up among 8 people by slicing it into 8 equal parts.

 

 

 

Take a look at the examples below. Some of the shapes are EQUAL. Some of the shapes are UNEQUAL. In order to be equal, the pieces must be the same size.

 

 

The first column shows equal parts. We could share those pieces fairly.

The other side shows unequal parts. These pieces would not be shared in a fair way.

 

Take a look at the following image below.
We will decide if the parts are EQUAL or UNEQUAL.

 

This square is divided into two pieces or parts.
Are the parts the same size?
Are the parts equal?
Yes, they can be shared fairly.
The two parts are EQUAL.

 

This rectangle is divided into six pieces or parts.
Are the parts the same size?
Are the parts equal?
Yes, they can be shared fairly.
The parts are the same size.
The rectangle parts are EQUAL.

We can also look at a shape and decide how to split it into equal parts.

Look at the triangle. We can divide it into three parts like this:

 

 

Let’s look at this triangle below. It is divided into three parts too. Are the parts equal?

No, they are not. The parts are UNEQUAL.

 

Look at the diamond. We can divide it into four EQUAL parts like this:

 

 

Now let’s look at this diamond below. It is divided into four parts too. Are the parts equal? No, they are not. The parts are UNEQUAL.
