Overview

When you add groups of objects together, you can find how many there are in all.

You can add large or small numbers together. You can add two or more groups together.

There are different tools that can help you to add. One way to add is by using pictures! You can count the pictures to help find the sum.

When adding three numbers, choose two to add first.

In this case, we can add 6 + 3.
6 + 3 = 9. Now, we will take our sum of 9 and join it with our last added.

9 + 2 = 11

Therefore,

6 + 3 + 2 = 11

Let’s try a few more problems together! Use the pictures to help you solve.

We can count the pictures to add.
The first group has 9 and the second group has 7.
Our addition sentence is:

9 + 7 =

When we count and add, we learn that the sum is 16.

9 + 7 = 16

We can count the pictures to add.
The first group has 5 and the second group has 3.
Our addition sentence is:

5 + 3 =

When we count and add, we learn that the sum is 8.

5 + 3 = 8

We can count the pictures to add.
The first group has 8 and the second group has 2.
Our addition sentence is:

8 + 2 =

When we count and add, we learn that the sum is 10.

8 + 2 = 10

We can also add more than two groups!

We can count the pictures to add.
The first group has 5 and the second group has 3.
Our addition sentence is:

5 + 3 =

When we count and add, we learn that the sum is 8.

Now we can join our sum with our last addend.

8 + 7 = 15

Therefore,

5 + 3 + 7 = 15

Remember: We can also add those numbers in any order and we will still get the same sum!

For example: We could add 5 + 7 first and then join the last addend of 3 with it.

5 + 7 = 12
12 + 3 = 15
5 + 3 + 7 = 15
