Overview

Subtraction is the opposite of addition! Knowing your subtraction facts can help you understand subtraction.

Practice will help you to become FAST and ACCURATE. That means your answers will come easily and they will be correct! Since the only way to master subtraction facts is by practicing, let’s go ahead and take a look at different subtraction problems.

In the problem above, there are 4 cats, but 2 cats are crossed out.
We can SUBTRACT to find out how many ARE LEFT.
When we SUBTRACT 4 minus 2, we have 2 LEFT.
We say: FOUR minus TWO equals TWO.
We write it like this:

4 – 2 = 2

Let’s look at another problem!

There are 5 trucks, but 3 trucks are crossed out.
We can SUBTRACT to find out how many ARE LEFT.

This will give us the DIFFERENCE.

When we SUBTRACT 5 minus 3, we have 2 LEFT.
We say: FIVE minus THREE equals TWO.
We write it like this:

5 – 3 = 2

Let’s try subtracting some smiley faces!

We can see that there were seven smiley faces to start with. Five of the smiley faces are now gone.
When we SUBTRACT 7 minus 5, we have 2 left.
We say: SEVEN minus FIVE equals TWO.
We write it like this:

7 – 5 = 2

What is 10 – 4 ?

We are subtracting the number 4 from the number 10.
The first number in the subtraction sentence is called the MINUEND.
The second number in the subtraction sentence is called the SUBTRAHEND.
This problem reads as 10 – 4 = 6.
When the SUBTRAHEND 4 is subtracted from the MINUEND 10, we get a DIFFERENCE of 6.

Let’s practice! Think carefully and try to answer each one accurately!
