Telling the Time – Half Hours

Overview

Being able to tell the time is a very important skill we must learn. We can take a look at a clock to see what the time is. A clock has numbers from 1 to 12 and has a big hand and a little hand.

In the previous lesson, we learned how to tell the time in hours. Today, we will take a look at what clocks look like in “half hours”.

Look at the clock below:

 

 

Look at the clock. The big hand is on the six. This tells us that it is half past the hour of _______ or ____: 30.

To read the hour on the clock, look at the small hand. Look to see which two numbers it falls between. On this clock, the small hand falls between 7 and 8. It is past 7:00, but not yet 8:00.
That means this clock is showing the time is seven thirty.
We can also write it like this: 7:30

 

Take a look at another clock below.

What is the time?

Notice the big hand is on the 6. That means it is __ : 30. We need to figure out the hour by looking at the small hand. The small hand is between the 3 and the 4, so the number will 3. The time reads 3:30.

It is three thirty.  You can also say It is half past three.

Let’s look at another example:

What is the time?

The big hand is pointing to the 6, so you should immediately know it is __ : 30. You need to figure out the hour by looking at the small hand, which is between 12 and 1. The hour will be 12, so the time on the clock is 12:30.

It is twelve thirty. It is half past twelve.

12:30

 

 

What is the time?

It is ten thirty. It is half past ten.

10:30

 

 

What is the time?

It is three thirty. It is half past three.

3:30

 

Here are some important facts that you should know.

An hour lasts for 60 minutes.
There are 60 minutes in one hour.
There are 24 hours in one day and a clock helps us to know the time in the day.
