Overview

Graphing points on a coordinate plane can help you analyze relationships between different sets of data. Consider the example below.

Graph the points on the coordinate plane using the chart below. What is the distance between the two points?

Point Ordered Pair
A (2, 3)
B (2, 6)

Step 1: Graph Point A

According to the chart, Point A has an ordered pair of (2, 3).
The ordered pair tells us to travel 2 points across the x-axis and 3 points up the y-axis.

Step 2: Graph Point B

According to the chart, Point B has an ordered pair of (2, 6).
The ordered pair tells us to travel 2 points across the x-axis and 6 points up the y-axis.

Step 3: Analyze

We can determine the distance between the two points by counting the number of units that fall in between them.

The distance between the two points is 3 units.
