Overview

Numbers can be written in a variety of ways. We already know how to write whole numbers using expanded and word form. Rewriting decimals can be a bit trickier.
Consider the number 15.375

The number is already written in standard form. We want to rewrite it in both expanded and word form.

Expanded Form
To write a decimal in expanded form, we multiply each digit by its place value. It can
be helpful to use the place value chart as a reference.

Word Form
When we write a decimal in word form, we use the word “and” to represent the
decimal. We write everything before the decimal as a whole number. We use the
place value of the last decimal number to express the numbers after the decimal.

Let’s look at 15.375 again.

Comparing two decimals

Once we understand the meaning of each digit, we can compare decimals to one another using the symbols below.

Let’s try comparing two decimals.

0.45 ___ .047

Step 1: Look at place value for each number

0.45

Place Value Chart thousands hundreds tens ones tenths hundredths thousandths 0 . 4 5

.047

Place Value Chart thousands hundreds tens ones tenths hundredths thousandths . 0 4 7

Step 2: Compare the two numbers
We can see just by looking at the place value chart that 0.45 is greater than .047 because we know that the tenths place is 10 times greater than the hundredths place.

Step 3: Insert the symbol

Look back at the comparison statement. We want the statement to read, 0.45 is
greater than .047. So, we insert the greater than symbol.
