Ordering and Absolute Value of Rational Numbers

Overview

We can use number lines to order numbers and determine absolute value.

An absolute value is a number’s distance from 0 on the number line. Absolute value
uses the symbol |n|.
For example:

|-12| = 1 2

| 12| = 1 2

-12 and 12 have the same absolute value because they are both 12 spaces from zero on the number line.

Ordering rational numbers is the same as ordering positive numbers. You place them in the order they appear on the number line.
For example:

Solve the inequality.   -2  ___  2

A. >
B. <
C. =

We can see that -2 is less than 2 because it is farther to the left on the number
line. So, the answer is B.
