Adding by 2

Overview

When you join or add groups of objects together, you can find how many there are in all.

Sometimes we have a group of objects and we want to add exactly two more objects to that group.

For example:

There are four turtles in the first group and 2 more turtles in the second group.
We can ADD them by joining the two amounts together.

This will give us the total number of circles.

When we ADD 4 plus 2, we have 6 in all.
We say: FOUR plus TWO equals SIX.

We write it like this:

4 + 2 = 6

Here’s another example.
In this problem, we are joining together two groups of crayons.
We are ADDING them together.
This will give us the total number of crayons.

When we ADD 3 plus 2, we have 5 in all.
We say: THREE plus TWO equals FIVE.

We write it like this:

3 + 2 = 5

This time, we are joining the numbers 5 and 2.
These numbers are known as ADDENDS.
Addends are the amounts that will be joined together.

This problem reads as 5 + 2 = 7.

When the ADDEND 5 is joined with the ADDEND 2, we get a SUM of 7.

When we add TWO MORE to a group of objects, we can remember that the SUM will be the number that comes two after that number when we are counting.

1 + 2 =

For example, 1 + 2 = 3. We also know that when we count, the number that comes two after 1 is the number 3. We can say: ONE… TWO, THREE. We have counted up TWO to get to the number THREE. This can help us to add quickly and correctly when adding 2 to a group.

10 + 2 =

Let’s try another example. What is 10 + 2? We can add or count two more from the number 10. We know that the number that comes after 10 is the number 11 and that the number that comes after 11 is the number 12. Therefore, 10 + 2 = 12.

2 + 8 =

Here is another example. This time our 2 comes first and our larger group comes second. We can still solve in the same way. What is 2 + 8? We can add or count on two more from the number 8. We know that the number that comes after 8 is the number 9, and that the number that comes after 9 is the number 10.

Therefore,

2 + 8 = 10

Look at the example above. Two groups are being joined together to find the total.
7 turtles plus 2 turtles will tell us how many turtles there are in all.
When we count, we know that the number that comes after 7 is 8, and that the number that comes after 8 is 9.
Therefore,

7 + 2 = 9 turtles.

There are 9 turtles in all.

Count the turtles to help find the correct sum. Counting the objects is a great way to check your answer too!
