Overview

Clocks tell us what time it is. Recall that there are 24 hours in a day and it’s important for us to know what time it is so we can keep track of our daily activities. For example, if school starts at 8:00 in the morning we need to be sure to get to school on time before 8:00 A.M.

Clocks use numbers and hands. A clock has a big hand and a little hand. These are called analog clocks.

Look at the clock below:

The clock above has a big hand (which tells the hour), and a small hand (which tells the minutes). For a more detailed review, you can read how to tell the time.

Look at the clock. The big hand is on the twelve. This tells us that it is _______ o’clock.
To read the hour on the clock, look at the small hand.
The time is  10 o’clock.
We can also write it like this:  10:00

Here are some facts that you need to remember.
An hour lasts for 60 minutes.
There are 60 minutes in one hour.
There are 24 hours in one day.

Let’s take a look at some other clock examples.

Look at the clock. The big hand is on the six. This tells us that it is half past the hour of _______ or ____: 30.

To read the hour on the clock, look at the small hand. Look to see which two numbers it falls between. On this clock, the small hand falls between 6 and 7. It is past 6:00, but not yet 7 : 00.
The time is six thirty.
We can also write it like this: 6:30

What is the time?

The small hand is on 2, so we know the hour is 2. The big hand is on the 6 which is 30 minutes. So we know that it is 2:30.

2:30

Let’s look at another example:
