Mass (Weight)

Overview

We can compare objects to one another in many different ways. We can compare objects by their height, length, volume, or even weight.

In this lesson, we will learn how to compare the mass (weight) of different objects and decide which one is the heaviest and which one is the lightest.

Look at the example below:

In the picture above, we have an apple, bowling ball, and a feather.

The feather is the lightest.
The bowling ball is the heaviest.
The apple is not the lightest or the heaviest. It falls in the middle.

Objects that are heavy are harder to pick up and carry.

Which one is heavier? A book or a small notepad?

We can compare the two objects. A book is heavier to hold. It weighs more than a small notepad.

Let’s look at another example:

Look carefully and compare.
Which one is the lightest?

In the following picture above, we have a ball, bike, and a car.

The ball is the lightest. It is lighter than the bike and the car.
It weighs the least amount.

Many of these questions are easy to answer because you can determine if an object is heavier or lighter based on your real-life experience with these objects.

Let’s take a look at this example.
Which one is the heaviest?

The book is the heaviest of the three objects!

From the animals below, which one would be the lightest?

The chicken is the lightest. It weighs the smallest amount.

Try this one!
Which one is the heaviest?

The TV (third image) is the heaviest.

Let’s try one more before we move on to practice questions.
Which one is the heaviest?

The bear (first image) is the heaviest. It weighs the most.

Ready to try some practice questions on your own? Let’s go!
