Overview

When we count, we usually count by ones. Let’s practice counting by ones to 20.

But we can also count by other numbers. This is called skip counting. You can skip count by any number.

Look at this picture.

 

The children are skipping rope. When you skip rope, you jump over the rope. When you skip count, you jump over numbers.

You can skip count by two.

0  2  4  6  8  10  12  14

This number line shows how to skip count by two. We start at 0 and add 2. Then we add 2 to 2 to get to 4. We add 2 to 4 to get 6. We add 2 to 6 to get 8. Each time we add 2 to the number.

We skipped or jumped 3 places and stopped at 3. Now start at 3. The next curved line stops at 6. Count up. 4, 4, 5, 6. We used 3 fingers. We skipped or jumped 3 places and stopped at 6. This number line is skip counting by 3.
