Finding the next shape in a pattern
Overview
We can use patterns of shapes to predict what shape will come next in a sequence. We see patterns of shapes all around our homes when we look at baskets, picture frames, and even windows. In the fall, leaves can make patterns of shapes as they fall from the trees. When a table is set with a plate, bowl, and glass, it forms a pattern of shapes on the table. Look around and think about where else you might see a pattern of shapes.
Much like Size Patterns, patterns of shapes can be used to predict the next item in a sequence. This can help us arrange items and make beautiful artwork and designs.
Here you will learn how to find the next shape in a pattern! First, let’s review some common shape pattern sequences you may see:

Remember that the sequence must be repeated more than once using the exact same order..
Practice Question 1
Take a look at this pattern. What shape will come next?
Look at the first sequence. Notice that it has 1 square and then 2 circles. We see that repeated next.
Let’s try it!
– We are starting with the sequence “square circle circle.” That same sequence is repeated. Then we have another square. What will come after the square?
Since patterns always repeat in the same order, we can answer this question by looking back at the other square items. The same shape will come after a square item every time.
Sometimes it helps to label all of one shape, like squares, with the letter “A” and all of the second shape, circles, with the letter “B.” This can make it easier to find the next shape in the pattern..

When you think you have reached the end of the sequence, just start over again at the beginning. Patterns always repeat their sequence more than once, so the first object is what comes after the last object.
