Frequently asked questions for the SHSAT

Question 1: Is the SHSAT all multiple choice?

The SHSAT exam is not all multiple-choice questions. The SHSAT test is broken into two sections: the English Language Arts (ELA) section and the Math section. There are 57 questions on each section. The ELA section contains all multiple choice questions. For the math section, the first five questions are not multiple choice. These five questions are called “Grid-In” questions where you will need to write and bubble in your answers. The remaining questions are all multiple-choice for the math section.

Question 2: What grade should you start studying for the SHSAT?

We strongly recommend that students start studying for the SHSAT exam at the start of 7th grade. Many students wait to study in the summer time, however, that is usually not enough time. The SHSAT exam is extremely competitive and requires practice, so starting in September when students enter into 7th grade is a fantastic time. This allows students to start studying in a low pressure environment while they familiarize themselves with the content and topics tested.

There are no calculators allowed on the SHSAT exam. You must be quick with mental math and arithemetic calculations that you can work on using your paper and pencil. Since the SHSAT is a 180 minute timed exam, it’s very helpful to learn various strategies and skills on the math section that save you time.

Each year, the scaled cutoff score varies. Here is the past cutoff data for Stuyvesant High School. In 2023, the cutoff score was 561. In 2022, the cutoff score was 563 for Stuyvesant. Past years from 2015 – 2021 have a cutoff score around 558.

Question 7: How much is one question worth on the SHSAT?

The SHSAT does not assign specific point values to individual questions. Instead, a student’s raw score (the number of questions they answered correctly) is converted into a scaled score for each section of the test. The scaled scores for the English Language Arts (ELA) and Math sections are then added together to give a final score. It’s important to note that the test doesn’t penalize students for incorrect answers, so it’s in your best interest to answer every question, even if you’re unsure of the answer.
