Addition Sentences: True or False?

Overview

In this lesson, we are going to master the skill of determining whether or not an addition sentence is true or false.

When two sides of an addition sentence are equal, then the sentence is said to be TRUE.

When two sides of an addition sentence are NOT equal, then the sentence is said to be FALSE.

For example, consider this addition sentence: 4 + 5 = 6

We can use the pictures above to help us.

4 + 5 does NOT equal 6.
4 + 5 equals 9

Therefore, the given addition sentence: 4 + 5 = 6 is FALSE.

Here’s another example. Consider this addition sentence: 3 + 7 = 7

We can use the pictures above to help us.

3 +7 does NOT equal 7.
3 + 7 equals 10

Therefore, the given addition sentence: 3 + 7 = 7 is FALSE.

Let’s try a few more! Decide if each addition sentence is true or false.

5 + 1 = 9 True or False?

5 + 1 = 6

This sentence is FALSE.

6 + 2 = 8 True or False?

6 + 2 = 8

This sentence is TRUE.

4 + 9 = 14 True or False?

4 + 9 = 13

This sentence is FALSE.

7 + 5 = 12 True or False?

7 + 5 = 12

This sentence is TRUE.

There are many additional strategies you can use to help you add correctly. We will learn about these in other lessons.
