Identify Fourths
Overview
Fractions help us to divide whole shapes into parts! Sometimes shapes are divided into four equal parts. These are known as FOURTHS. Fourths are a type of fraction.
Look at the example below:
Three PARTS are shaded. There are FOUR parts that make up ONE whole rectangle.
THREE FOURTHS of the rectangle is shaded in.
Many shapes can be divided into fourths, or FOUR EQUAL parts.
Here are some examples:
Each shape has ONE FOURTH shaded.
Let’s take a look at this example.
How many fourths are shaded?
This square is divided into equal parts.
How many parts make up the whole square?
FOUR parts make up the whole square.
There are FOUR parts.
How many parts are shaded?
TWO parts are shaded.
TWO FOURTHS of the square is shaded.
Let’s take a look at this next example.
We will decide again how many FOURTHS are shaded.
This circle is divided into equal parts.
How many parts make up the whole circle?
FOUR parts make up the whole circle.
There are FOUR parts.
How many parts are shaded?
ONE PART is shaded.
ONE FOURTH of the circle is shaded.
