Subtraction Sentences: True or False?
Overview
When you find the difference between two groups of objects, you are subtracting.
When the minuend minus the subtrahend equals the difference, the subtraction sentence is said to be TRUE.
When the minuend minus the subtrahend DOES NOT equal the difference, the subtraction sentence is said to be FALSE.
It’s important for us to determine whether or not a statement is true or false, since you may be tested on this concept in your school.
For example, consider this subtraction sentence: 10 – 7 = 3
We can use the pictures above to help us.
10 – 7 EQUALS 3
Therefore, the given subtraction sentence: 10 – 7 = 3 is TRUE.
Here’s another example.
Consider this addition sentence: 12 – 7 = 4
We can use the pictures above to help us.
12 – 7 does NOT equal 4.
12 – 7 equals 5
Therefore, the given subtraction sentence: 12 – 7 = 4 is FALSE.

8 – 7 = 3 True or False?
8 – 7 = 1
This sentence is FALSE.
6 – 2 = 4 True or False?
6 – 2 = 4
This sentence is TRUE.
