Defining a Coordinate System – Graphing Points
Overview
Graphing points on a coordinate plane can help you analyze relationships between different sets of data. Consider the example below.
Graph the points on the coordinate plane using the chart below. What is the distance between the two points?
Point | Ordered Pair |
A | (2, 3) |
B | (2, 6) |
Step 1: Graph Point A
According to the chart, Point A has an ordered pair of (2, 3).
The ordered pair tells us to travel 2 points across the x-axis and 3 points up the y-axis.
Step 2: Graph Point B
According to the chart, Point B has an ordered pair of (2, 6).
The ordered pair tells us to travel 2 points across the x-axis and 6 points up the y-axis.
Step 3: Analyze
We can determine the distance between the two points by counting the number of units that fall in between them.
The distance between the two points is 3 units.

The four corners of a square are located at the points (3, 5), (3,8) (6,8) and (6,5).
Draw a plot of the points on a piece of paper to illustrate the square.

John maps his friends’ houses on a coordinate plane. The numbers on the axis represent miles.
How far does John live from Simon?
- 3 miles
- 5 miles
- 8 miles
5 miles
